Cleve’s brother Eugene taught him how to weld, enabling Cleve to work in Staten Island’s shipyards as a welder. At his house on Holland Avenue, SI, he welded custom trailers for hauling everything from motorcycles to automobiles. He built steel fences and security gates. He designed and welded wood stoves during the gas crisis in the Seventies, and got UL approval for his prototype. He and Jude bought property in Towanda, PA and Cleve gathered scrap lumber and building materials and built a beautiful house without a blueprint. They intended to move there, but eventually rented, then sold it and moved to Washington DC after living for several years in African countries.
